Changing Habits
We all have our habits; they may be good or they may be bad, what ever they are, they are habits. The things that we do, on a day to day basis, everyday. Our habits define how we live and what we do. I kicked off the year, not wanting to set resolutions and set myself up for failure.
I started thinking of all I want to change for myself, then started looking for ways to change those things. Over the summer, I read a Joyce Meyer book called 'Making Good Habits'. My daughter had read some of her books and I could see positive changes in her, so I decided to read one.
As I read the book, I thought of all of my habits, good and bad. One week after I read the book, I started changing my writing habits, I knew If I didn't write everyday and work on my Screen Play, it would never get written. I had to change my habit, of writing when I felt like it.
It took six months from the time I wrote the words fade In, until I made it to Fade out. With the re-write's and the editing process, I had finally wrote my first ever, action movie. I took the steps that I need to take, to get my baby to the big screen. I filed my script with the Writers Guild of America and entered it in a contest, as a first time screen writer. By changing my daily writing habits, I am on my way to achieving my dream.
I am now working on changing my eating habits, I want to shed the few pounds I have gained. When I was younger, I was active and ate healthy for my kids. When I turned forty, my metabolism slowed down, I stopped being as active as I used to be. I started eating guy food with my teen age son and my body started to show it. I went from having great abs, to having belly fat.
I never thought about what we were eating and the bad eating habits we had developed. I don't believe in dieting and I never had to in the past. I finally started talking to my teen age son, about eating healthy. I put my foot down and took control of what we were eating. I started saying no to Pizza and Chicken Wings once a week.
Instead of looking for diets to loose the weight I have gained, I looked at the food I was buying and changed that habit. I am also on a budget, eating organic foods can be expensive. I do make a trip to Costco and buy as much produce as I can. I now try and focus on eating healthy and doing something physically active everyday. I load us up on green vegetables and we now, only eat Pizza once a month.
My son and I love to bake, I cut back on baking once a week, to baking once a month. It was a challenge to survive holiday baking, because I love to bake and give it all away. I cut back on what I made, so I would cut back on what I ate. We don't deprive ourselves from the home made cookies, we just cut way back.
I am still working on regaining the body I once had, I am just having to work harder at it, with age and hormones, playing their role. I notice the difference, in my son, he has lost the baby fat that he once had, so it is worth changing our eating habits, for him. I stopped buying Chips and pop, and started keeping fruit on the table. I bought a juicer and taught my son how to use it.
I make, what I call, green shakes. I use a Ninja and load it with Spinach, Kale, Cucumber, Avocado, Celery, Carrot, Apple and Coconut Oil. It looks like baby food, it's thicker then juice, without taking away the fiber from food, that juice machines take away. I'm not juicing to loose weight, I am loading up on vitamins that these foods are loaded with.
I still have bad habits that I need to work on changing, I know I can't change them all at once, so I don't try to. I just try to focus on eating healthy and getting some kind of exercise. Five minutes of walking or riding my exercise bike, is better than getting no exercise at all. Everyday, I have to think of my habits and remind myself to change them.
I have bad lunch habits, I know I have to change, I'm guilty of turning to a Cheese Burger, because it's fast. I should be making a healthy lunch, to take to work, I am bad at taking the time to do it. The reality is, it takes time and work to change habits. I have always convinced myself, it is better to try and fail, then to not try at all. I have days as well, where I get lazy and don't want to do the work.
I refuse to step on a scale, I don't want a number to scare me, so I stay away from them. I had my own battle with anorexia when I was young, I thought I had to be a certain weight. When I had kids, I wanted them to be healthy, so I cooked healthy and made myself healthy in the process. Now I am getting back to eating healthy, to be healthy, not just to loose weight.
In the mean time, I keep reminding myself every day to work on my habits. I do it with my writing, to the food I eat, to the way we live. What habits do you have, that you know you need to change?
