Writing for Passion, not Money
If I were to write my own fantasy about writing, I would create a world for myself, where I would make a ton of money as a writer. I would be extremely rich and be able to buy myself and everyone in my family, a luxurious house and brand new cars.
I would have myself as a New York times best selling author, for writing my Romance books and every theater would have a movie burning up the box office, because of a screenplay that I wrote. I would be at all of the movie premier's, walking the red carpets, in all of the top name fashions.
Then that thing called reality steps in and reminds me that, making money as a writer, is far from easy as the part of the actual writing. It takes time, to make money as a writer and it's a ton of work that has no pay, only self reward.
I had a co worker ask me how much money I make as a writer, when I told her, she laughed and asked "why I do it"? The answer for me was easy, I love to write and it's my passion. The truth is, I get lazy at trying to make money as a writer and that is where I go wrong.
I have juggled working a full time job, being a mom and trying to learn the craft of writing, for so long, that breaking the bad habits and getting off of my lazy ass, to try and get an agent is the good habit I haven't formed yet.
Though I keep writing Screenplays and entering Screenwriting contests, I haven't actually made money with any of them yet. It isn't because they aren't great, I just don't have the extra money to spend, protecting my work, before I submit or pitch it to anyone.
I have made many amateur mistakes, sending my writing off to someone, without filing my work with the WGA or the Library of Congress. I gave a selfish asshole Director my work, hoping that he would want to work with me, only to have it blow up in my face, in more ways, then I care to talk about. I definitely learned the hard way and paid the price.
My advice, to anyone that thinks that they want to "Be a Writer", don't expect it to happen over night, be prepared for disappointment, know that you will be rejected and make sure that you register your work, before you submit it, to protect your copyright's.
If you think that every Blogger is rich, you are delusional, yes some have had success and made money Blogging, but really, not that many of us have. Bloggers are mostly paid by placing ads on their Blog's and it takes a ton of clicks to make any money. If people don't click on an ad, each time they visit your Blog, forget making money.
So why do I write? Because it's my passion. I love to create characters, I love to create a story line and a world that is far from the reality, in which I live in. It's like giving birth, I create a life, I decide how I will mold it and how it will end and I love every painfully, brutal step of it.
When I finished my first Screenplay, I looked back on the process, I had no idea what my character's were going to do, where they would end up and how it would end. After six months, I had finally finished and was surprised with myself, that I had created this story, all alone and I was proud of myself.
I say brutal process, because I will wake up in the middle of the night, with this scene in my head and until I get up and write it down on paper, it will haunt me all night long. Then my alarm goes off at 6 am and I have to get up and go to my day job, tired as hell.
I also learned that I was causing myself to have writers block, by not getting up and writing what ever is going on in my brain. I used to try and push it out of my head, to go back to sleep and wake up the next day, with writer's block.
Writing is something that I pour my soul into. I write from the heart and try and let the story tell it self at the same time. It's easier for me to write about my feelings and emotions, then to talk about it and yes, this has had a huge impact on my love life (ouch).
So until I write my own story, as a writer that makes millions writing. I will continue to write because it is my passion and not just about money.
What is your passion and are you making money doing it?
Everyone have an amazing week!
