In To The Light
I was inspired to write this post, as I was looking around me and listening to people. I just turned 45 and I was taking that walk down memory lane, as most people do when we have a birthday. In life we have the choice, to fear getting old or to embrace it.
I think we all at one point or another, have to stop and reflect on where we are in life, where we have been and embrace or endure what we have been through. It teaches us that we can change and grow as people. Life makes us walk through many lights, the bright and the dark.
Myself, I learned to have Faith and to turn to God in my moments of darkness and to pray my way back into the light. We all have moments of darkness, in one way or another. Maybe it's God's way of reminding us, that not every day will be Sunshine, Rainbows and clear blue Skies. We just have to learn to make it through the Storms and the dark cloudy days.
What I find the most saddening, are the people that live in darkness. You know the ones, they hate to see other people happy or hate to see other people succeed. They're always negative about everything and have nothing positive to say about anyone or anything, they live in darkness.
We all live around or know someone that is that way, negative and dark. They are the selfish ones, that can never be happy for someone else and hate to see people laugh or smile. They come in different forms and try to bring people around them down, because it makes them feel better about themselves.
Admit it, by now you have thought of at least one person, that you know is this way. I know, that you know, what I'm saying here. Just in case you don't, I will give you some examples, to help make it easier, for you to recognize the dark people you deal with, in your own life.
The ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend: They don't know how to let go and move on, they hold onto the past and don't want you to move on with someone else and be happy. They don't want to see you succeed in your career or another relationship. They don't want your life, to be better without them.
The friend: that tries to discourage you with any attempt that you make at happiness or success. They tell you that your crush is the wrong person for you and look for something negative to say, to make you walk away and give up. They don't want you to be happy, because they aren't happy.
They don't want you to make more money then them, have a job title that they don't have and don't want you to be in the spotlight for anything, because they don't know how to get what they want in life and don't want to see you get what you want either. They focus on the negative or they want to be the "Star of the Show", not you.
The relative: We all have these ones, they may have the best car and the best house and they don't want anyone else to show them up or to out do what they have. They love to show up at family gatherings, bragging about everything from, how much money they make or how great their kids are and want to remind you, that they did better than you.
Then there are the relatives that have failed relationships, failed careers and they want you to fail at everything, to drag you down with them. They probably have drug addictions or are in denial about being an alcoholic and can't accept responsibility for their own actions and the bad decisions that they made for themselves.
The co-worker: The one that get's pissed off, when you get any kind of recognition at work. They watch you bust your ass in your job, to learn as much as you can about your job and to be able to give your best, to be able to advance. While they try to manipulate everything or still credit for your ideas and work, to make themselves look good.
They don't want to hear that you are happy outside of work, they don't want you to make more money then them. They try to discourage you or lie about you, or when it's your birthday, they try and keep people away from you, so you don't get any attention. They want to still your thunder in anyway that they can, because they don't know any other way, to get what they want.
How am I doing so far? How long has your list grown, in the past few minutes, of the people that you know, that are this way. The dark, negative, unhappy people, that try and bring you down. The people that we have to learn to disconnect with and in most cases, need to stay away from.
I have made them mistakes, of letting other people drag me into their darkness, discourage me and bring me down. I have always had a fascination with people and personality types. What makes us tick? What makes us happy? What causes people to be so dark, selfish and negative?
I decided not to waste any more of my time, trying to figure those people out, but I do take a moment and pray for them. I pray that they find their way into the light and for God to lead them to the path, that God had planned for them. I believe in Karma and what you wish on others, will come back on you, so it's always better to wish and pray for something positive, even for your enemies.
What I have learned is, for some the darkness that they live in, can be caused by Depression or in some cases, Dementia. These people don't choose that darkness, it's chosen for them, it's a battle that they can't control and need medication for. There is no cure and they sometimes, aren't aware of the things that they say or do.
I found this great article on Yahoo, it explains why people laugh at things that aren't funny and aren't aware of the inappropriate things, that they say and do. My heart goes out to the people that battle these diseases and aren't being treated for it and I pray that some how, they get the help that they need.
Some people are just down right, mean and nasty. Those are the people that I try to kill with kindness, because they don't expect people to treat them that way. Pay them a compliment on their hair, their clothes or tell them to have to a good day and then watch their reaction, it's priceless.
Each day, we all can make that decision, of what kind of person that we choose to be. The kind of person that lifts other people up, or the kind of person that brings other people down. It's all about change and we are the ones that have to make that change for ourselves.
I like to help other people, because it makes me feel good. I like to make other people smile, because it makes me smile. I love to see other people happy and I love to be happy myself. I love to see other people succeed, because I know that they have worked for it, they earn success and they deserve it.
It's who I choose to be as a person. I try to be the best person that I can be, each day and I try to do a good deed each day, some how, some way. I don't do it for any reward, I do it because that's who I am. I choose to be the kind of person, that offers a hand up to someone that is down.
I don't choose to be the person, that looks for someone to kick while they are down and there are many bullies in this world that love to kick people down. As sick and sad as it is, it's true, it makes them feel empowered and makes them feel better about themselves.
I pray each day, that God continues to lead me into the light and away from any kind of darkness. I pray for the people that are living in darkness, to be brought into the light.
What can you do for yourself or someone else today, that will change you and lead you into the light? What hand can you offer to someone that is down? What kind words can you speak to someone else, to simply make them smile.
Everyone have a great week!
