No Stranger To Rejection
As a writer, the one thing that I have become familiar with is rejection. I remember the first article I submitted to Parent Magazine, it was rejected and I was very frustrated. Over the years I have submitted numerous pieces of my work, to several different places and have been rejected. I was rejected by Field and Stream Magazine for an article and told my children's book was to auspicious, by a publisher.
This past week, I have had two articles rejected from Yahoo and two published on Yahoo Voices. There was a time, when I would let rejection discourage me. It was when I read Stephen Kings non fiction book 'On Writing' that helped me realize, rejection happens to the best writers. I have saved my letters of rejection and joked with both my kids, that I will staple them on the wall.
Being rejected is what taught me, to never give up and to keep writing. I look at Stephen King not only as a brilliant writer, I see him as a great teacher and inspiration to all writers. In his book 'On Writing' he talks about rejection and how he never gave up. I have read numerous books about writing and of them all, I think his book was the most inspiring to me.
Rejection happens to us all, in one way or another in life. How we deal with rejection, is what helps us choose the paths, we take next. Though it can be very frustrating to be rejected, it helps define who we become. If we learn to turn rejection into a positive and use it to help us grow, it can be a learning tool. The most important lesson that we can learn from rejection, is to not give up, to keep trying and work harder.
As I launched my Connecting Organs, to help Organ Recipients, I have had numerous people blow me off. I refuse to let it get to me. If one person is not interested in what I am doing, another will be. I am determined to help the two recipients I have right now and I won't give up. If I am rejected, I move on to the next person and keep trying, I won't let it discourage me.
My advice; to anyone that has been discouraged with rejection, 'Never Give Up'. A few years ago; I had a conversation on facebook with a wrestler, I said those words to him and he used it to his advantage, big time. The most important thing is to believe in yourself, if you don't then nobody else will either. I believe in myself as a writer, I take the negativity and use it to change and grow, as a writer.
Look at it this way, the next time you are rejected, when you ask someone out on a date, don't let it get to you. If the person you are interested in blows you off, try a different approach or simply move on. I use that as an example of rejection that everyone has dealt with in life, because we all have been. I will post my rejected articles on this blog soon, to show my rejected work.
Everyone have a great week!
